The SSI validator was designed to check the functionality of a SSI encoder device

picture of SSI validator
The SSI validator was designed to check the functionality of a SSI encoder device. It is plugged between the encoder and the clock generating periphery (e.g. drive or PLC). While the validator is examine the encoder, clock signals must meet the specification of being lower than 350kHz. Further more CLK and DAT signals need to handle the RS422 specification. The periphery has to transmit cyclic CLK pulses. The encoder does not need to turn. The result is shown immediately.

With 2 LEDs the SSI validator indicates the encoder's operating state. Recognizing a failure (e.g. internal encoder power failure, wire failure, internal encoder driver failure or noisy signals not able to properly reconvert - see 2nd picture) the red LED is flashing or permanently on. The SSI validator is not able to detect an internal encoder GRAY code failure. This functionality could be implemented on demand. If the encoder is operating in a normal way, the green LED is permanently on. The SSI validator has a second interface for connecting a SSI listening device.
